Troubleshooting

Kira → About → Diagnostics shows versions, the active provider and recent errors (with secrets redacted), which helps when reporting issues.

“Ollama isn’t responding”

Install Ollama from ollama.com/download. Kira notices it within a few seconds and starts it for you whenever it isn't running; you can also press Start Ollama in Kira's AI settings.

Check it yourself: open http://127.0.0.1:11434/api/version in a browser. If you changed Ollama's address, set the same URL in Kira → AI settings.

The first reply takes a long time

Ollama loads the model from disk on the first message. The very first GPU run can also take a minute or more while Ollama initialises CUDA/ROCm. Later replies are much faster.

In Kira → AI → Performance, raise “Keep model loaded” to avoid reloading between messages, at the cost of RAM/VRAM.

Local replies are slow or the PC lags

  • Pick a smaller model (Gemma 3 1B or Llama 3.2 1B).
  • Lower the context size to 2048.
  • Try “GPU” device mode if you have a dedicated GPU, or “CPU” if the GPU is busy with a game.
  • Kira → AI shows how much of the loaded model is in VRAM. Ollama decides the final split.
  • Set Performance to “Battery saver” to reduce avatar frame rate.

“The API key was rejected”

Re-copy the key from your provider dashboard, paste it in Kira → AI, and press Test connection. Make sure billing or free-tier access is enabled on the provider side.

“The provider is rate-limiting requests”

You hit the provider's limits for your account tier. Wait the suggested time, choose a smaller model, or raise your limits with the provider. Kira does not retry automatically or switch providers behind your back.

Kira is invisible or shows a placeholder

The 3D avatar needs WebGL 2. Update your graphics driver. If the GPU is blocked, Kira falls back to a static image; everything else still works. Animation can be set to “Off” in Settings → Performance.

I can’t click Kira / I can’t click things behind Kira

Click-through is a toggle. Press Ctrl+Alt+L or use the tray icon → “Click-through”. When it's on, clicks pass to apps underneath; turn it off to drag or click Kira.

No voices or speech input

Spoken replies use Windows voices: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices. Speech input needs a microphone permission (Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone) and a one-time Whisper download in Kira → Voice.

Where is my data?

%APPDATA%\app.kira.companion holds settings and kira.db. Kira → Settings → Memory can export it all as JSON or wipe it.
